탄생 37돌을 맞이한 GRASS GIS에 관한 몇 가지 이야기(그냥 재미삼아 적어 보는 글 - Trivia of GRASS GIS)

 

• GRASS는 1982년 미국 공병대에서 개발하기 시작했다.

• 미국 공병대는 GRASS 개발을 1990년대 중반에 포기하고 모든 소스 코드를 오픈소스로 개방했다.

• 공개된 GRASS 소스 코드의 저작권이나 라이선스에 관해 미국 공병대에 2년 넘게 질의했으나 아무런 대답이 없어 1997년 미국 베일러 대학과 독일 하노버 대학이 그 소스 코드를 직접 관리하며 오픈소스 커뮤니티에 의해 다시 개발되기 시작했다.

• 공간정보 분야 국제표준화기구인 OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium)의 전신은 1992년 결성된 Open GRASS Foundation(OGF)이다. Open GRASS Foundation은 GRASS 사용자 모임에서 시작된 단체다.

• 신상희는 자신의 석사 논문을 위해 1997년 SUN SPARCstation에 GRASS를 컴파일해 설치하고 몇몇 분석 기능을 이용했다.

• 지금 UN Geospatial Information Section의 수장인 엄경수 실장이 미국 유학 시절에 접한 첫 GIS 소프트웨어가 GRASS다.

• GRASS 매뉴얼을 한국어로 최초로 번역한 이는 이춘석으로 지금은 진주산업대학교 교수로 재직 중이다.
  

• 2000년대 초반에 한국공간정보통신에서 GRASS의 상업적 이용을 위해 대대적인 번역과 병렬화 등을 시도하였다. 이 작업에는 지금 서울기술연구원의 최준영 연구위원도 참여했다.
  

• 국제 FOSS4G 컨퍼런스의 전신은 2004년 태국 방콕에서 개최된 FOSS/GRASS GIS Users Conference 다. 이 대회에 참석한 사람들이 의기투합해 2006년에 OSGeo를 결성하였으며, 이후 매년 FOSS4G 국제 대회를 개최 중이다.
  

• GRASS는 OSGeo 창설 프로젝트 중 하나다.
  

• 미국 공병대가 개발에서 손을 뗄 당시 UNIX에서만 구동되던 GRASS는 이제 Windows, MacOS, Linux 등의 다양한 운영체제에서 구동될 뿐만 아니라 QGIS의 공간분석 모듈로도 활발히 이용된다.
  

• GRASS의 단위 명령 구동 방식은 최근의 OGC WPS와 궁합이 잘 맞는다.

The new GRASS GIS website is out!

 

In occasion of its 37th birthday the GRASS GIS project is proud to present its new website! The site has been redesigned with modern tools to be responsive and also easier to maintain. Content is more discoverable now and easy to browse too.

 

WHAT’S COOL

• The Learn page offers a curated list of tutorials in different languages and links to videos. The new Try online section provides links to Binder and rollApp online applications that allow testing GRASS GIS without installing it.

• Our long standing and rich history in the GIS and open source world is now presented in a much more attractive layout. Have a look at the timeline of releases and websites!

• The revamped gallery of screenshots shows some of GRASS GIS capabilities through visual examples.

• Project resources easily reachable: mailing lists, wiki, RSS news feed, the various GitHub and docker repositories.

 

THE TECHNOLOGY

We chose a static format based on HUGO and all the code and content is hosted in a dedicated repo in GitHub. Nicolas Bozondesigned the website theme and many others helped with content curation and creation. In detail, the page content is now written in markdown. Several times a day the website is automatically deployed from the GitHub repository to our internet server at https://grass.osgeo.org/.

 

WHAT’S NEXT

With this new web technology and the availability of the code and content in a public repository, we want to encourage and simplify community members’ participation. If you want your GRASS GIS use cases, blog posts and cool screenshots to be part of if, you only need to create a pull request. No fear, we have a manual for contributions.
